SOLUTION
Built to work everywhere, from day one
More than 3,000 Allegion Schlage readers sit at every access point across Auburn's 1,875-acre campus — residence halls, academic buildings, dining locations, the library, athletics venues, and more. Every reader accepts a tap from a phone or a watch, and every one integrates with Auburn's existing Lenel access control system, so nothing had to be torn down and rebuilt.
Illumia's platform is what makes that hardware feel effortless. It issues and manages each student's credential over the air, so a mobile TigerCard is ready in a student's Apple Wallet or Google Wallet before they set foot on campus — no card office visit, no line, no waiting.
A three-year path from opt-in to only option
A small number of students without a compatible device can still receive a physical card. No student is required to buy a phone — mobile is simply the default for everyone else.

01
2021
Opt-in mobile launch alongside the physical card. Adoption passes 80% in year one.

02
2022-2023
Mobile adoption keeps climbing while physical cards continue in parallel.

03
July 2024
Returning students with an active mobile credential default to mobile-only for building access, dining, and Tiger Club spending.

04
Fall 2024
Incoming students receive no physical card at all. Tiger ID moves to online photo submission, and the mobile TigerCard becomes Auburn's official, and only, student ID.
RESULTS
What changed for everyone
FOR STUDENTS
One credential for access, dining, retail, events, and more. Self-service provisioning means no card office visit required.
Phones and watches are always on hand, so students always have their ID with them.
FOR OPERATIONS
Credentials are issued and revoked remotely, with a full audit trail across every access point. Mag stripe vulnerabilities are gone.
Reduced fraud, since phones aren't shared the way physical cards sometimes were.
FOR LEADERSHIP
A ten-year modernization goal reached in a single semester, with 80%+ adoption and no need to mandate removal of the plastic option.
A foundation now in place for parking, transit, and future use cases, with Auburn recognized as a leader in mobile credential adoption.
